Notes / History | Avenue Road was constructed on fields originally known as "The Roughs" . The picture shows the road built, but un-developed as was practice for new estates. Residents were obliged to adopt the roads to undertake the proper surfacing and upkeep, mainly at weekends, thus the temporary road surfacing was made up with sleepers or rolled Clinker, as shown. The local press reported that the roads of Long Thornton Park had all been made up by August 1929. This picture actually shows the work in progress - on the right, steel mesh has been laid for the concrete used by Mitcham Urban District Council. |
