Notes / History Mitcham historian Tom Francis remembered kingfishers making tunnels in the Wandle riverbank prior to nesting. They were particularly common in the Watermeads area.

He recalled one year when a pair of birds nested in the bank near Rutters Mill, Morden.
Surrey County Council wanted to straighten an awkward bend in the river but this would have
meant destroying the birds’ nest so local landowner, Mr.Hatfeild, refused to allow it.
