Notes / History | This watercolour shows a fisherman on the banks of the River Wandle possibly near to the site of Deeds Mill.. At one time the river was considered the best trout fishing river in the country. However the influx of more industrial companies and the discharge of chemicals and other waste into the river during the 20th century brought this to an end. By the 1960s the Shell Guide indicated that the river was 'no more'. Levels of the river had fallen greatly and for a while the river was known as a open sewer. Thankfully the river has now recovered and whilst water levels haven't returned to their former level they are increased. Fish have also returned to the great numbers. |
