Notes / History | The supermarket was an American initiative from the early twentieth century but it did not transfer to the UK until the 1950s. This was partly due to fears regarding the effect of uncontrolled spending in the post-war era. Tesco had 50 self-service stores by 1950 and developed further chains including Premier, Victor Value and Fine Fare. This photograph shows customers at the Tesco store that opened in London Road around 1970. It is now half its original size and has become a Tesco Express rather than a main store. |
