| Notes / History | This picture provides an interesting insight into contemporary catering and entertainment. Apparently the Devonshire could provide "Celebrated Steak Puddings," a "Cup of Tea Straight from the Pot," and "A Thorough Good Dinner Within the Means of Every Working Man." Notice the posters in the window advertising performances of "The Monk and The Woman" at Wimbledon Theatre and "On The Warpath" at King's Hall Picture Palace in Tooting. James Devonshire traded at 25 Abbey Parade in 1910, before he and his wife emigrated to Sydney, Australia in March 1911. The business name lived on briefly, on Merton Road, later known as High Street, Colliers Wood. The street sign for 'The Pavement' shows the earlier name for the row of 5 shops on this site, which were re-built between 1913 and 1915. |
