Crown House was constructed by Bernard Sunley & Son in 1960. The 14 storey office block was named after the nearby Crown Inn (a pub had stood on or near this site since 1801. ) The 1932 pub building can be seen in the foreground of the picture below.
Crown House initially held commercial space and a Royal Mail sorting office. Soon after the block was completed, Caters supermarket replaced the adjacent pub.
In 1985 Merton council moved the majority of its offices to Crown House. The building became a fully functioning civic centre in 1990, when an extension block was built on the former supermarket site. This housed a council chamber, cafe and a purpose built library.
