Notes / History | The area of Wimbledon Common known as Caesar’s Camp lies on the south western edge and commands a fine view across the valley to Epsom Downs. However, contrary to popular myth, Julius Caesar almost certainly never visited Wimbledon. The camp has never been fully excavated but it remains of great historical interest and possibly even pre-dates Caesar. Some argue it was built in the Neolithic period, others that it was an Iron Age or Bronze Age encampment. Later research, however, suggests it may go back as far as the sixth or eighth century BC. |
