|Notes / History||Archeological dig at Locomotors site in London Road.
The dig was organised by the Surrey Archaeological Society just before Merton Council started to build new homes on the site. The site had been occupied by an 18th Century Mansion, where banker Henry Hoare lived for 50 years.
Relics of ancient Rome were unearthed, such as roof tiles and pottery. A carved ivory weaving shuttle, thought to be Saxon, was also discovered. Evidence of a Tudor house and signs of the Middle Ages were also present.
