Notes / History | A new sign is unveiled to mark the official opening of the new Crown Inn, Morden on 2nd August 1961. Amongst the onlookers are the Head of the Courage & Barclay Brewery. The Mayoress of Merton & Morden and Bernard Sunley, the developer responsible for the Crown House complex (Merton Civic Centre). The pub sign was designed to combine the traditional crown, (symbolising allegiance to the monarchy), with maritime figures. The latter were probably a reference to Merton’s naval hero, Admiral Nelson, who lived at Merton Place, near South Wimbledon during the early 1800s. |
