Notes / History | Aerial view looking down St. Helier Avenue, early 1930s. The Northern line depot is just visible, with the recreation ground, farther down. This picture gives an idea of the overall design for the estate, which was based on the ideas of Ebenezer Howard. He believed that, while towns were overcrowded, the countryside offered fewer employment opportunities. By creating "Garden cities", planners could achieve the best of both worlds, constructing shops, churches, pubs and businesses in one place, while preserving woodland and other natural features. |
