Notes / History | The present 17th Century Grade 2 listed house is on the site of a former Augustinian Priory. Situated within the grounds is an old carp pond, thought to date back to the Middle Ages, as well as a Dovecote which is the oldest complete structure in Mitcham and believed to have been built by the Priory and Convent of St Mary Overly in the 16th century. At the time of this photograph the house had been substantially altered internally and externally and very few architectural features remained. Shown is the fine original staircase which leads up from the front entrance hall. The staircase comprises of a broad moulded bannister supported by the twin 'barley sugar' twisted bannisters. |
