Notes / History | The present 17th Century Grade 2 listed house is on the site of a former Augustinian Priory. Situated within the grounds is an old carp pond, thought to date back to the Middle Ages, and also a Dovecote which is thought to be the oldest complete structure in Mitcham and to have been built by the Priory and Convent of St Mary Overly in the 16th century. Shown is a room within the Canons house and it can be seen that, at the time of this photograph, the house had been substantially altered internally and few architectural features remained. In particular, windows in the property have been much altered over the years and many have been blocked off, enlarged and added. In latter years the house and gardens have been managed by the local authority and a leisure complex built. |
