Notes / History | Shown is a sketch looking over the old carp pond towards the listed Canons House. The present house is believed to have been built in the 17th Century and is on the site of one of five manors referenced in the Domesday Survey. The carp pond was enlarged by Robert Cranmer in around 1664, and fish stocked in the pond would have provided an invaluable food source for the estate. A dovecote, the oldest building in Mitcham, still remains on the estate and would have provided another food source in earlier times. The Canons was occupied as a private house until shortly before outbreak of war in 1939 when it was purchased by the Corporation of the Borough of Mitcham. During and after the war the estate was neglected and it was not until the late1950s that the Local Authority were able to start managing the house and gardens. |
