| Notes / History | The Manor of Biggin and Tamworth, Mitcham, was granted to Merton Abbey by Henry VIII after the suppression of the Abbey. The estate's manorial assets and tenancies derived an income for successive 'Lords' of the Manor. The estate included Biggins Farm (later renamed Biggins Grove) and Tamworth House. Circa 1803-04 Lord Redesdale purchased the Manor. Educated at Cheam School he achieved the distinction of becoming Lord Chancellor of Ireland and also Speaker of the House of Commons. The economic decline and death of his wife resulted in Lord Redesdale demolishing Tamworth House and selling the land. Biggins Grove was 'modernised' and renamed Tamworth House and offered for sale in 1818. |
