Notes / History | Built close against the former Mitcham station, the present mock-Tudor building was put up between the wars. It replaced a small eighteenth century inn. The original inn is thought to have been built in response to the increased trade generated by the construction of a turnpike leading to Sutton in the mid eighteenth century. It stood at a turning to Morden and Ewell and was probably a convenient loading and unloading point for carriers' wagons. |
