Notes / History | By the mid-1860s the existing school in Merton was inadequate for the growing population and a new school for the area was required. The new school was built from £10000 left by Richard Thornton of Cannon Hill, a marine insurance millionaire to endow schools for the parish. The building work began in 1870 by the laying of the foundation stone by the Bishop of Winchester, the Right Reverend Samuel Wilberforce, the son of the anti-slavery campaigner, William Wilberforce. The building was enlarged several times before being sold and converted into apartments. |
