Notes / History | The area of Morden witnessed a dramatic transformation following the extension of the Northern Line in 1926. It was now easy for people to commute between leafy Surrey and their jobs in the Capital. Many families were keen to leave the inner-city slums and find a better home on the newly constructed St. Helier estate. As the local population increased, so did the demand for new schools. Poplar Road school was opened in 1932 – it is a testament to school discipline that a class of 42 children needed just one teacher. |
