Notes / History This picture from the Mitcham News & Mercury 1938, shows a scene from the light operetta, “Patience.” This was just one of many works by Gilbert & Sullivan, to be performed by pupils from Mitcham County School for Boys*. Situated near Commonside East, the school (known before 1922, as Upper Mitcham Boys’ school) developed a reputation for the quality of its musical productions. Amongst the most popular events of the Mitcham social calendar, the shows were staged at Mitcham Baths Hall, on London Road. In true theatrical tradition, the older pupils performed the male roles, while the unbroken voices of the younger boys were better suited to the female vocals.
