Notes / History | As the number of cars on the roads increased, so did the number of accidents, Children were especially vulnerable and local schools took pains to organise special training sessions and displays. These encouraged pupils to act responsibly when cycling or playing near or crossing the road. Notice the Belisha beacons - these were still a relatively new addition to roadside crossings and were named after the Minister of Transport, Leslie Hore Belisha, who once lived in Wimbledon. |
