Notes / History | Rosehill Boxing Club dinner at the Crown Inn, Morden in 1956, (now the site of Merton Civic Centre). Despite its amateur status, the club's annual gathering was a fairly formal affair, with a series of toasts to Her Majesty the Queen, honoured guests, club officials and vice presidents. Boxing enjoyed renewed popularity during the 1950s, partly due to the number of competitions staged for National Servicemen, or the resident Armed Services. There were also a growing number of youth clubs and boxing clubs, many of which promoted boxing as a means for giving youngsters a sense of purpose and self-discipline. |
