Notes / History | These celebrations in 1995 marked the 50th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe on 8th May 1945. On 7th May 1945, a week after Hitler’s suicide, the Germans had surrendered to British Field Marshall Montgomery and the Supreme Allied Commander General Eisenhower. The surrender document, signed by the German General Alfred Jodl, took effect on the following day. In Britain the government immediately announced two days of holiday and huge crowds gathered in Trafalgar Square and outside Buckingham Palace where the King and Queen and Prime Minister Winston Churchill appeared on the balcony. Two days of national holiday were announced and street parties were held throughout the country. VE day continues to be celebrated on 8th May every year. Although it marked the end of the war in Europe, the Second World War didn’t end until the Japanese surrendered on 15th August 1945. |
