Notes / History | Local residents gather for a senior citizens party, Merton Public Hall, Kingston Road. Music was a popular part of this type of event, as people of the same generation were able to sing along to the songs of their youth, such as 'Roll Out the Barrel', 'Lambeth Walk', and 'Underneath the Arches'. During the 1930s and 40s, the banjo became very popular, due to the films of the Lancashire comedy actor and musician, George Formby. (Note the lady holding the banjo on the right). |
