Notes / History This picture, taken around the beginning of the 1900’s, shows the carved granite blocks that were laid in 1872. The stones are a commemorative tribute to Sir Henry William Peek M.P.

The letters: H W P E E are shown (Henry William Peek).

Peek had helped save the Common from enclosure. His subsequent efforts also prevented the Common from being exploited by landowners who wanted to build on this historic site.

The camera is pointing towards the North East, in the direction of Wimbledon Windmill.
