Notes / History | Popular with family groups and walkers, Kingsmere also attracts a diverse range of wildlife. For a man-made pond, it is relatively shallow and therefore vulnerable to drought. This was particularly evident during the hot summers of the 1990s, when water levels reached an all time low. Groups of eight or nine heron were spotted plucking stranded fish from the remaining film of water! In recent years, the eastern end of the pond has been dredged and deepened, in an attempt to preserve the water supply. The resulting spoil was used to create a central island, which provides shelter and nesting grounds for waterfowl. |
