Notes / History | Enjoying a stroll along the water's edge. "Queens Mere" was created in 1887, to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. A marshy area, to the west of the windmill, was excavated and filled with water taken from a dammed stream. This formed the deepest pond on the Common, perfect for boating and swimming - the tradition of early morning bathing was particularly popular with Wimbledon males. |
