Notes / History | A popular schoolboy haunt. This peaceful scene belies the rather murky history of this area. During the 1830s, (before the creation of the pond), the adjacent meadow was often used for duelling, (a practice outlawed in 1838, following the death of a marksman). More recently, in 1984, the body of former Russian spy, Boris Hatton (Baklanova) was discovered in the pond. An inquest delivered an open verdict, despite the suspicious nature of his death. |
