Notes / History | Cycling became a popular activity during the 1880s, following the invention of the Safety Bicycle in 1885. This had improved suspension and pneumatic, rather than solid wooden tyres. Cycling was one of the few pastimes which could be enjoyed by both sexes, without the presence of a chaperone. Cycling has always been forbidden on the Common itself and the surrounding footpaths. However, the Commons Conservators have now created designated cycle-paths, the majority of which are situated around the periphery of the Common to preserve wildlife habitats and avoid clashes with other Common users. |
