Notes / History | Children test the strength of the ice-sheet covering Seven Islands Pond. Prior to the construction of Mitcham Public Baths during the early 1930s, the pond was an unofficial swimming pool for local residents, particularly youngsters. Tragically a number of children drowned during its use - the dangers would also have increased for those "skating on thin ice" during the winter months. If the ice shattered unexpectedly, it was possible to become trapped in the icy waters below. |
