Notes / History | Increasingly alarmed by levels of unemployment, Mitcham Parish Council organised an emergency programme of public works. This included jobs such as levelling plots in the local burial ground and repairing footpaths on the north-eastern side of the Common. Twelve men were employed on the latter project and were paid a total of £24.2s.6d (£24.12½p in today's money). |
