Notes / History | John Marsh Pitt was the son of George Pitt Jr and Priscilla Finch Marsh. When John was in his early twenties the Berkeley Teetotal Society was founded and was highly successful with over one-hundred members. The society attracted many members due to its unusual and imaginative social events such as competitions and exhibitions of handicrafts where prizes could be won. Popular speakers also came to the society meetings which were held at Vestry Hall. In 1892 John came of age and as a result the people of Mitcham enjoyed a week full of celebration and competitions – all at the expense of his father. John married Emily Bell at Waterford, Ireland, in the same year, but later returned to Mitcham where they made their home at “Shamrock Villa”. John was also a life-long friend of Tom Francis. |
