Notes / History | John R. Chart’s undertaker’s workshop in Clarendon Grove doubled as a mission room. His bench, tools and sometimes coffins were screened by curtains when the mission was in session. The Charts had strong links to the Band of Hope, which aimed to keep working men from the evils of the demon drink through education and self-improvement. John R. Chart conducted Bible classes here and organised public gatherings where the “Entertainments” ranged from songs and recitations to sketches and musical interludes. Special performances such as Magic Lantern shows or concerts by Mitcham Brass Band were held in St. Mark’s Parish Room or Vestry Hall. |
