| Notes / History | Gerard de Visme (1726-97) was the son of a Hugenot nobleman. A wealthy merchant, he lived in Lisbon before retiring to Wimbledon in 1791. Here he built Wimbledon Lodge, an impressive Greek-style mansion on Southside. Active to the last, Gerard was, at 71, one of the oldest members of the Wimbledon Volunteers. The design for his pyramid-shaped tomb is thought to have been inspired by Egyptians ruins discovered by French archaeologists in the year of his death. |
