Notes / History | Mitcham Fire Brigade outside the station. Front centre is Sam Turner who sounded the alarm call and was the son of the local baker, to his left Bill Shepherd. Next, behind the wheel, Bill Southerton - the son of the licensee of The Cricketers Inn. On the far left is Robert Masters Chart, the Lead Officer and architect of Vestry Hall. Above Bill Southerton is Freddie Samson, the driver and local vet. The three men at the top are Athol Harwood – Captain, C. Hallwood who worked for the local paper and Alf Clarke who was the son of the local doctor. In front of them there is W. Baker, Tubby Foster and possibly Teddy Powell or the grocer Billy Barter. Standing on the back of the engine is Alf Jenner – assistant engineer and next to him William Jenner the engineer who was also the local ironmonger. |
