Notes / History | Atkinson Morley Hospital was built using money bequeathed by Mr Atkinson Morley in the late 1860s. At the time of building there were only a few large houses on the Ridgeway in this area, with beech woods behind, and the hospital was behind an imposing wrought iron gate. The lodge next to the gate was occupied by the Caretaker and his wife who performed general hospital tasks and also deputised for the cook. . The lodge and gate were lost when the access road was improved and the hospital lost 12 feet of land from the front of the building. |
