Notes / History This illustration by Tom Francis (1872-1953) shows the ford by Mitcham Bridge on Bishopsford Road. The ford was blocked by ‘tank traps’ when invasion threatened in 1940. It was never reopened once the threat was reduced so this picture must pre-date World War 2.

Tom Francis was born in London House, just south of Fair Green, and lived in Mitcham all his life. He was a prolific amateur photographer who recorded Mitcham in pictures at the end of the Victorian era. He was also an influential member of the local civic community.
