Notes / History | The local authority had faced demands for a public swimming pool from 1913 onwards; however developments were halted by the pressures of world war and the Depression. One of the driving forces behind the construction of this pool was Councillor Alderman Cyril Marsz. The architects responsible for the contemporary design were Messrs. George Lowe and Partners. The purpose built complex was finally opened in 1967 by Lord Hunt, a famous mountaineer, who had successfully climbed Everest in 1953. Years of heavy usage on the 1960s design meant that major refurbishment was necessary in the 1990s, which lasted 2-3 years. Today, as many of Merton's sporting venues, Morden Park Pool is managed by Greenwich Leisure Ltd. There is also a small teaching pool and gym. Due to high maintenance costs, the council is investing £11m in a brand new leisure centre to replace Morden Park Pool and is consulting with residents on what the pool might look like. |
