Notes / History | Mitcham can boast one of the oldest cricket grounds in the world. Described as a “Nursery of English Cricket”, Mitcham Cricket Club has nurtured generations of local, county, national and international players. This picture shows a number of Mitcham stalwarts including umpire, John Bowyer (shown far right, in the black coat and straw boater hat) plus bowler and landlord of The Cricketers, James Southerton, and brothers, Tom, William and Richard Humphries (Mitcham players between 1862 and 1874). As you can see, this image pre-dates the wearing of standard cricket whites. |
