Notes / History | Sheila Shaw Riding School, Cricket Green, Mitcham in the 1960s. Horse–riding has been a popular sport for centuries. Generations of youngsters, particularly those from wealthy backgrounds, have been taught to ride as preparation for hunting and warfare in later life. Until fairly recently, horse-riding was regarded as a male orientated sport. This may be because it was only considered ladylike for women to ride ’side-saddle’, a rather awkward and uncomfortable position, particularly for a rider encumbered by layers of heavy skirts. |
