Notes / History | The NRA had their rifle ranges on the common from 1860 to 1890, when they transferred to Bisley in Surrey. The NRA weren’t totally appreciated by the Wimbledon locals as although the Annual Meeting brought people into Wimbledon it also attracted “undesirable ruffians” to the area. The meeting became popular with the fashionable people of London who would visit at night to be entertained by clowns, conjurers and minstrels. The NRA also cut down trees on the common to allow clear sight to their butts. |
