Notes / History | Gentleman's Singles Final, 1950s. The long trousers worn by the player, pictured left, were a standard part of "tennis whites" until the 1960s. Notice the movie camera, bottom right - live television coverage of the championship is now a key event in the summer programming schedule and games are relayed to 167 countries. However back in 1937, when the competition was first televised, viewing was restricted to a fraction of British households. Footage was limited to 30 minutes per day and only covered Centre Court games. |
