Notes / History | Tram 1816, shown at Fair Green, Mitcham outside Westminster Bank and Leonard Davey & Hart, Auctioneers and Estate Agents. The driver is pictured alighting from the tram. Note the advert for Whitbread's Ale & Stout on the side of the tram. The side boards on this tramcar suggest that this was part of the Southwark to Mitcham service, which began as an extension of route 6 to Tooting Junction. The service ran from Monday to Saturday in 1935, with Sunday services during the summer. (Route 6 from Mitcham to West Croydon ceased in December 1933.) This picture also shows wires and poles in place, ready for the introduction of the new trolleybus service in 1937. The white cap covers worn by the tram staff were only in use during the summer months, so the picture was probably taken between May and September 1937. |
