Notes / History | Consumption of soft drinks such as Coca-cola and lemonade rose steadily during the 1950’s American style vending machines began to appear in public places, including stations. Compare the cost of a modern soft drink (45-60p), with the 6d paid for a cup of Idris dispensed from this 50’s innovation (less than 3 pence in modern money). Remember, while Idris may appear cheap by modern standards, it was still fairly pricey given contemporary living costs. |
