Notes / History | The signal box on the left controls the level crossing at the entrance to the station, closing the gates to stop road traffic when the train is due. The signalman is holding a staff to pass on to the fireman on the engine. This staff is the authority to the driver to continue down the single track section. Whilst this is in the driver's possession he can be sure no other train can enter the section. The train has come from West Croydon and will continue on to Mitcham Junction and Wimbledon. Note the semaphore signals. The centre signal controls the main line through and the other two control the goods lines to Croydon that begin either side of the track behind the engine. The lorry on the right is waiting to continue along Beddington Lane towards Mitcham. |
