Notes / History This picture was taken from the bridge which the track goes under to reach the station platforms beneath the entrance on the right. The station is on the Wimbledon to Croydon Railway which opened in 1856.

The scene has very much changed today, the road has been widened and its surface, note in the picture, very considerably improved.

A claim has been made for Mitcham as being the oldest continuously working station site in the world, the Surrey Iron Railway having been in use here from 1803.
