Notes / History | This house was hit by one of the 36 high explosive bombs that fell on Raynes Park during the Blitz, a devastating second world war bombing campaign by the Germans in 1940 and 1941. The exact location of the bomb can be seen on a map drawn up by The Bomb Sight Project from the London WW2 bomb census, previously available only by viewing in the Reading Room at The National Archives. In total some 692 high explosive bombs and 6 parachute mines fell on the borough of Merton during this period (bombsight.org). The Blitz, 'which was targeted at British cities, ports and industrialised areas, had a devastating effect on London. It began on 7th September 1940, ‘Black Saturday’, when German bombers attacked London, leaving 430 dead and 1,600 injured. London was then bombed for 57 consecutive nights, and often during daytime too (https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/the-blitz-around-britain). |
