Notes / History | In the middle of 1940 the Ministry of Food decreed that communal kitchens be set up in London to feed people who had been bombed out and therefore had no cooking facilities and also to accommodate people working in companies that had no canteens. The idea spread throughout the country but was embraced more enthusiastically in London than in other places. When the British Restaurant in Benedict Road was broken into around Christmas 1943, it was reported that 2 hams, 56lb of beef, 60lb of sugar and 15lb of tea were stolen. The food was obviously ready for Christmas lunch but the restaurant still managed to produce a meal of stuffed roast lamb for the 100 people who usually eat there. |
