The impending coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953 brought great joy and excitement to the people of Merton. Local councillors, churches, schools and community groups began planning a wide range of events and activities to mark the occasion.
Prizes were awarded for the best decorated houses, the most colourful gardens and fancy dress competitions, in addition to parades, dancing, concerts and sports activities.
In the heart of Mitcham, Fair Green was decorated with colourful bunting, flags and messages of support for the new Queen.
