Notes / History | Traders and Travellers gather for Mitcham Fair. Nineteenth century fairs were more like markets than the fun fairs of today. Many Travellers made a living as itinerant traders, peddling a variety of household goods from pots and pans to rugs, brooms, baskets and woven chairs. Their “Brush Wagons” (see picture left) functioned as mobile stores and were designed to carry large loads. Goods were also hawked from door to door and the varied sales cries echoed round the streets of Mitcham. |
