Notes / History | Ford over the Wandle by Mitcham Bridge. There has been a bridge over the river at Mitcham for at least 300 years. The ford was the original crossing at the point where the bridge now stands. Horsedrawn carts continued to drive through the ford after the bridge was built as the water prevented the wheels from drying out and splitting. The construction date of the brick bridge is about 1882. The ford beside the bridge remained until the late 1940s when the roadway was widened and the bridge extended over the ford to provide a footpath. |
