The City and South London Railway (now the Northern Line) was extended to Morden in 1926.
The striking Art Deco station complex was designed by London Transport architect Charles Holden. It featured a central booking hall flanked by small shops, with an adjoining bus terminus. By the end of its first year in operation the Tube station was being used by over 500,000 people each week.
The new Underground service made it easy for people to travel between London and leafy Surrey. It triggered rapid local development, encouraging people to make Morden their home and transforming the quiet rural community to a thriving urban suburb.
